Penelope Neri's novel
Obsession contains a reference to
Othello. Neri writes, "There, sumptuously robed in historic fashion, and with all due pomp and circumstance, this year's Lord Mayor, James Whitehead, would kneel to pledge his allegiance to his sovereign lady, Queen Victoria, as had so many before him" (p. 118). The phrase "pomp and circumstance" originated in
Othello. In Act III Scene iii, Othello says, "The spirit-stirring drum, th' ear-piercing fife,/The royal banner, and all quality,/Pride, pomp and circumstance of glorious war."
Obsession was published in 2003.
